The Story of Doe Lea was an interactive project, using film, photography, events, walks, talks and workshops to engage local residents in portraying the story of the village of Doe Lea.

Artist John Slemensek of Studio Bokehgo undertook a yearlong residency in the village of Doe Lea in Bolsover supported via funds from Section 106 planning conditions.

The aim of the project was to deliver an intergenerational film project with residents focused on fostering community awareness and understanding, and developing new skills.  There is a tradition of filmmaking in the village and this project aimed to capture the voices of the current community of Doe Lea in a creative, stimulating and inspiring short film exploring what a sense of community means today in the village.

The artist delivered a range of opportunities for local people to engage from poetry, film and animation workshops to photography walks and the Doe Lea Pet Awards. The film has become a visual tapestry weaving in and out of the day to day lives of generations young and old in the village. It was designed to be honest and share the integrity and good nature of the village that John witnessed over his residency.
